Origins of Feng Shui

Chinese feng shui is deeply influenced by the Five Elements Theory of the I Ching. The formation of feng shui is a complex process, integrating knowledge from geography, astronomy, ecology, and more. The core concept of Chinese feng shui is the unity of heaven, earth, and humanity. Ancient Chinese scholars, through long-term observation and practice, developed a unique feng shui theory.

Feng shui is the embodiment of the combination of I Ching culture and the human living environment, reflecting people's pursuit of a good natural living environment. It attempts to reveal the harmonious relationship between man and nature, and represents mankind's yearning and exploration for a better life.

Introduction to Feng Shui

Feng shui emphasizes the harmony between humans and nature, with the core principles being "the unity of heaven and humanity" and "the flow and gathering of qi." First, "the unity of heaven and humanity" requires buildings to be in harmony with the environment, adapting to natural conditions. Second, qi is the universal energy, and its flow and gathering affect the auspiciousness of the environment. Therefore, layouts should allow qi to flow smoothly and gather in favorable positions, thereby bringing good fortune.

Additionally, "yin-yang balance" and "the generation and overcoming of the Five Elements" are also important principles in feng shui. Yin and yang complement each other, and the balance of the Five Elements is the foundation of auspiciousness. The form school focuses on terrain and landforms, while the rational qi school emphasizes time and direction. Combining both can provide a comprehensive analysis of feng shui; choosing the right direction and time can enhance auspicious effects.

  • Yin and Yang

Definition: Yin and yang are fundamental concepts in ancient Chinese philosophy, representing two opposite yet complementary forces in nature.

Application: In feng shui, the balance of yin and yang is considered a symbol of auspiciousness and harmony. For example, the orientation of buildings and the layout of interiors should consider the balance of yin and yang. Places with ample sunlight are yang, while shady areas are yin, and they should be reasonably combined to achieve balance.

  • Five Elements

Definition: The Five Elements are metal, wood, water, fire, and earth, which have intergenerative and interdestructive relationships.

Application: In feng shui, the theory of the Five Elements is used to analyze and adjust the flow of energy in the environment. For example, based on an individual's birth chart, suitable Five Elements can be chosen to arrange the home or office to enhance fortune and balance energy.

  • Bagua

Definition: The Bagua are the eight basic symbols in the I Ching, each composed of three lines, representing eight basic phenomena in nature.

Application: The Bagua is used in feng shui to analyze directions and energy flow. For example, the Bagua chart can be used to determine the orientation of buildings and the layout of rooms to achieve harmony and auspiciousness.
